Cleaning the Cage
|
Step 1- Make sure you have everything you need to clean your pet's cage (garbage bag or bin; scooper; bedding; a mini cage [optional] for your pet to be when you're cleaning; a nose plug [you'll thank me later]; and a small vacuum)
Step 2- If you choose to put the gerb in a separate cage, make sure to put a top on the cage because gerbils can jump like a kangaroo (I made that mistake once and my gerbil almost escaped). Remove all toys and the excersize wheel (if you have one). Now open the garbage bag/bin and take the scooper and scoop all the bedding into the garbage and continue until the cage is about empty. Take the vacuum and remove the excess bedding. (Every 2-3 weeks take a hose and wash the whole cage to keep it clean; *WARNING* DO NOT LEAVE ANY SOAP OR OTHER CLEANING SUPPLIES EXCESS IN THE CAGE WITHOUT RINSING THOROUGHLY OR ELSE THE GERBIL MIGHT GET SICK). Step 3- Refill the cage with new fresh bedding (about 3 inches deep of bedding). Also refill water (Refill about every 2 days), food bowl (Refill twice a day) and put the gerbil back into his clean, happy home. |
Tips
• Gerbils enjoy running wheels. Always use mesh or solid wheels. Barred wheels can catch their feet and tails and cause injury and even death.
• Make sure the cage is rinsed thoroughly after using soap
• If you do get a wired cage, do not choose one that can be chewed through and it needs a solid base for the gerbil to stand on comfortable.
• An aquarium is often better because it is safer, it's easy to see your gerbil and it cannot chew through it. It is also nice and easy to clean.
